Since my last post I discovered something about myself. Collaboration is not really my thing. Not even with a great friend with good ideas. We created some nice pieces (currently on show at the Elevation Gallery in Canmore, Alberta) but now I’m off the nest (so to speak) and on to other things. Until I get the hang of updating my website with new images – here are two pieces that were in the Art in the County show this summer. CONFINEMENT and STRUGGLE.

Why? You’d have to ask her. We have begun … and a 7-foot nest is floating on East Lake at the bottom of her garden. I have shot a nude man at sunset building it and a young family wrapped in rags towing it. We are creating images of people in fantasy environments with the nest as Home and Safety and Sanctuary. We’ll work right through the winter. I’m showing the first piece from the project at Sue’s new show of paintings at Mad Dog Gallery that opens Sept. 25. Collaboration is new for me. We’ll see how this goes … Susan has strong ideas of her own and could probably beat me in a leg wrestle, but we have great respect for each other’s work. We’re both serious but like to have a laugh, too. I’ll let you know how it’s going.

It’s September 12 and my new website is up and running and looking good. Janet is urging me to use Facebook and Twitter to spread the news but I think I’ll leave that to her. When the spirit moves me or I have something to say, I’ll get into this blog thing – and use my website and this space to do what all artists want to do. Share with the world. Bye for now.

Hello and welcome. This is my first blog – my maiden flight – so I’ll go slowly and be brief. I’m excited to get my new website up and running – actually it’s NOT quite up yet. The old website is still up as at Aug 28 but I’m hoping the SHINY NEW one will be up in a few days.

I’ve got a lot of work to show you and ideas to talk about. The main thing you need to know about me is I’m first and foremost a black and white, real film photographer. I love shooting black and white and I love darkroom printing. I know it’s easier on a computer but I don’t care. I find working with my hands, my enlargers, the light, the temperature, the chemicals, the paper, the timer and The Fates preferable to pushing buttons. Having said that, I shoot digital when I have to and I can manipulate images with the best of them. I just prefer not to … or rather, I prefer darkroom manipulation techniques that creative photographers and printers have used since the 1800s plus a few I’ve come up with myself. But I’m grateful for the technology that brings me online to share thoughts and pictures with the world. I hope you enjoy what you see at baldphotographer.com and I’ve promised myself (and my computer-savvy wife) that I will update regularly with new work, news of projects, ideas and probably a rant or two. All the best, Graham
